From what materials are the eco-shake shingles made?
The eco-shake is manufactured from two recycled products, vinyl and cellulose fiber. The vinyl is similar to that of vinyl siding, only more flexible. The cellulose fiber is a variety of recycled wood products ground to fine sawdust. Vinyl is a very durable plastic that has been used in the construction industry for many years. The eco-shakes also contain UV inhibitors, fire-retardants and colorant. The eco-shake shingles are so durable that they carry a 50-year transferable warranty.
Can any roofer install the eco-shakes?
Eco-shakes are lightweight (250 pounds per 100 square feet) and easily installed. Any qualified roofing contractor can install the eco-shake shingles.

Check with your local insurance agent to find out if the discounts are available in your area.
Does the color of the eco-shakes fade?
There is a natural range of shades in all colors of the eco-shakes due to the cellulose fiber. This is a natural occurrence and is not the result of fading. The eco-shakes contain two UV inhibitors, manufactured by Ciba-Geigy, the leading manufacturer of UV inhibitors. These UV inhibitors protect the eco-shakes from fading and from becoming brittle over time. The eco-shakes have been through extensive xenon testing with minimal discoloration. During the nine years that the eco-shakes have been installed, there has been no reported fading and/or discoloration.
How are the eco-shakes installed?
The eco-shakes are installed similar to wood shakes. Eco-shakes are individual pieces in widths of 5", 7" and 12", and are 22" in length, with a maximum exposure of 10" to the weather. The eco-shakes should be nailed over solid decking with 30# felt applied directly to the deck. The eco-shakes can be installed with either straight or with staggered coursing for a more shake-like appearance. The eco-shakes can be installed in all climates and are acceptable for both residential and commercial pitched roof applications. For complete installation instructions refer to the eco-shake application instructions provided by the manufacturer.
